MEWSA

Avery is reluctantly starting her first year of high school. She wants to get by with as little interaction with others as possible because of her social anxiety, but that hope is quickly diminished when she has to do an icebreaker activity with one of her classmates named Jared. They learn they both want to play an MMORPG called Guild Wars of Alvarydia, but didn’t really know anyone to play it with since MMOs are more fun with friends. Jared gives Avery his contact information and asks to meet with her in-game after school. Avery spends the rest of the day anxious, worried about the online meetup with this person she just met. Will everything go fine? Or will things take a turn for the worse?

MEWSA is a game I developed by myself in RPG Maker MV back in late 2017. I was taking a Web Design class at the time at GMU in the fall semester, and the final project was to create our own portfolio site. During the summer I bought RPG Maker MV since it’s a game engine that doesn’t require coding knowledge to make games, plus I wanted to mainly make role-playing games. I decided to develop a demo for my portfolio site since at the time I didn’t have any games I could call my own.

I developed the general idea for MEWSA, a game to teach awareness on social anxiety, a couple of years prior. I have had social anxiety for many years, and it has always been a struggle for me to get people to understand it. I wanted to make a game that showed what it was like living with it. I had a couple initial ideas of a silent game and a visual novel, but decided to take advantage of the opportunity to make a Role-Playing Game in RPG Maker MV.

I worked on the game when I could in my spare time outside my classes and homework, and managed to get the demo done for my Web Design class’ final. I plan to make this a full game someday with original art and sounds/music with a team. But for now, it will stay as a proof of concept to show my game design and writing capabilities.
